The Museum of Czech Literature and the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic organize the Most Beautiful Czech Books of the Year competition each year. Czech publishers, students of graphic arts and printing schools, graphic designers and institutions registered a total of 255 titles from 15 November 2017 to 17 January 2018 in the fifty-third edition of the competition, which took place this year.
The competition evaluates contemporary book designs, as well as the quality and originality of the printing and bookbinding. As has been the tradition, the author of the catalogue and the whole competition design this year is Zdeněk Ziegler, the winner of the Catalogues section of the previous year. The international jury of the competition, composed of a Technical and Artistic Committee, evaluated the graphic, printing and illustrative adaptation of publications published and printed in the Czech Republic over the past calendar year. Pavla Pauknerová, who works as a graphic design theorist at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, was elected Chair of the jury. Prizes are awarded in seven categories (Specialized literature, Fiction, Literature for Children and Young Adults, Textbooks for Schools of All Levels and Other Teaching Aids, Books on the Visual Arts, Catalogues and Bibliophilia and Art Books). The three bestplaced books are announced in each category and 50,000 CZK is awarded to the first-place winner.
The Museum of Czech Literature also grants the Arno Sáňka Prize to students of art and printing schools and, together with the Museum of Decorative Arts, a special award to a graphic artist under the age of thirty. Other prizes are awarded by the Association of Czech Bibliophiles, The Association of Czech Graphic Artists Hollar and The Association of Printing Firms, which is also responsible for setting up the Technical Committee. The awards ceremony, along with the presentation of the award-winning publications and shortlisted titles in each category, took place on 19 April 2018 in the Star Summer Palace (letohrádek Hvězda). The most beautiful Czech books were also on display in Small Villa at the Museum of Czech Literature during the Prague Museum Night or the Open House Prague Festival. In addition, visitors are able to leaf through the books at the Book World Fair, the Tabook International Festival of Small and Medium-Sized Publishers, at the Designblok International Festival in Prague, at the Moravian Gallery in Brno, as well as in regional libraries. The Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and The Museum of Czech Literature ensure their participation in the competition for the most beautiful books of the world, at international fairs and at exhibitions.
